History

Thumbcat Software Solutions, LLC was founded in 2019 by Nicholas J Halase in Milwaukee, WI.

I founded Thumbcat Software Solutions to facilitate my passion for software development. I believe in the power of open-source software and the strength in that community. I want to work somewhere where software development is a passion, not a paycheck—where competition is a creative motivator, not the enemy. I want to set an example: growth and profit do not need to drive a company for it to succeed. For as long as I get to develop cool software, work on fun projects or collaborate with cool people, I will consider this company a success.

Philosophy

A business doesn't have to be a cold and greedy entity. At Thumbcat Software Solutions, business is an efficient vehicle for getting things done and making an impact in the world—plain and simple. That being said, there are a set of principals to which we would like to adhere.

  • Open-source is a powerful strategy and we will always strive to be open-source with our solutions. That being said, we believe there is also a time and place for closed-source solutions.
  • Respect the user and their privacy. Provide accessible solutions, because...
  • We believe the best software solutions are humble and subtle. A solution is invaluable, a gimmick is not.
  • Be transparent and honest—always.

A word on profit

Profit should come from the support of a customer, not from a business wanting to relieve a customer of their money. We believe people will reward hard work and excellent quality if they feel like it's more than just a price tag. Reward—that is how we would like to think of profit.

What's a thumbcat?

The company was named after the founding member's cat, Hiro—a black cat who is very polydactyl. Hiro would sit in his cat-tree with his arm over the edge, as if suggesting, "sit and listen a while, let me tell you a story."

Hiro

As an additional fun-fact, Hiro was named after the protagonist of the book, Snow Crash, by Neal Stephenson.
